I can't seem to get enough of Steig. Here was another of his longer children books that does not disappoint. In classic Steig fashion he takes a simple story and explores the larger human themes of friendship, truthfulness, conscience, and restoration; only this time it comes through the story of a loyal goose and his false conviction.

I found 'Solomon: The Rusty Nail' at a fleamarket, which I then read (many times) for my son. Totally fantastic.

I love "The Real Thief", it made me cry. Nobody does the human condition like Steig.
I agree - Steig gets the human condition...I found myself tearing up at the end of Abel's Island...simply ends the book with four illustrations and no words - it's gripping and brilliant.
